Rare Disease Day 2026: Making the Invisible Visible

“Rare” often sounds distant. In reality, rare diseases are part of everyday life.

More than 300 million people worldwide live with a rare disease – many of them facing years of uncertainty before receiving a diagnosis. For patients and their families, the journey is often long, complex and life-changing.

  • Rare diseases are rare individually but affect around 1 in 20 people globally

  • Over 6,000 rare diseases have been identified worldwide

  • 72% are genetic, and 70% begin in childhood

  • Patients wait around five years on average for a correct diagnosis

These figures highlight a reality that goes far beyond healthcare. Rare diseases shape daily routines, careers and family life – often in ways that remain invisible to the wider public.

From awareness to earlier action

Rare Disease Day was created to bring rare diseases into public focus and encourage collaboration across healthcare systems, research and society. Increasing visibility can help shorten diagnostic journeys, improve access to care and strengthen support for patients and caregivers.

Caring for People’s Health

At STADA, Rare Disease Day connects directly to the purpose of Caring for People’s Health as a Trusted Partner.

Through our Specialty Pharma teams, STADA focuses on supporting patients living with chronic, complex and rare conditions and contributing to improved access to treatment and care.

Because advancing healthcare also means working towards a future where no disease remains untreated.
