Nizoral Turns 40: Celebrating a Remarkable Brand Journey

Four decades of science-backed solutions, innovation and trusted expertise in scalp health: Nizoral marked its 40-year anniversary with a 2-day international expert event in Brussels.

As the #1 medicinal brand for dandruff treatment in Europe[1] and STADA’s first international CHC brand, Nizoral is now available in 38 EMEA markets. To celebrate this milestone, we brought together international brand teams, scientific, medical and commercial experts united by a shared vision for Nizoral’s next growth chapter. 

Where it all began

Nizoral’s story began with the discovery of ketoconazole in Belgium in the 1970s. On stage, Dr. Piet De Doncker, closely connected to the discovery and development of ketoconazole, Prof. Dr. med. Diamant Thaçi and pharmacist Geert Vanderstichele guided us through Nizoral’s journey over time – sharing medical insights from its scientific beginnings to today’s role in scalp health. With Nizoral 2% Shampoo, the brand introduced a ketoconazole solution for dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis, supported by clinical evidence from the very beginning. Since then, Nizoral’s effectiveness has been validated in more than 60 clinical trials involving over 8,000 patients.

Nizoral under STADA’s leadership

Since STADA acquired the EMEA rights in 2018 from Janssen, Nizoral has entered a new phase of growth. Within seven years under STADA management, the brand has grown. 

Celebrating 40 years

For us, Nizoral stands for science, strong brand equity, and continuous innovation – from medicinal dandruff treatment to a broader scalp care portfolio for everyday use. With dermocosmetic innovations launched from 2022 onwards, the brand has expanded into new scalp care segments, including shampoos, conditioner and tonic solutions. For consumers, Nizoral offers nowadays not only clinical-proven efficacy against dandruff but also broad range scalp health – new for psoriasis.

The anniversary event reflected Nizoral’s medical heritage, strong market momentum by sharing the ambitious vision for the brand with clear action items to advance scalp health across EMEA.
